Chickens Dogs and Sunshine

So this is the time of year when I guess everyone is looking back on 09.  I recently went to a great party where everyone who came had to bring the 10 favourite photos from 2009.  Each person showed their images and then told the story behind it.  There were a lot of us who didn’t know each other and even those who did learned some fascinating things about their friends that they never knew – if not for that photo.  Picking my list was hard because as a photographer there are so many favourites for many different reasons.  It has inspired me to put together two top ten lists to share with you on the blog.  One list of our personal work and another from our professional work.  Might take us a little while so I thought I would get a jump on Aaron and post a couple that I found while making my list for the party.    I had a border collie named Bandit and a coop full of chickens when I was a kid. Bandits favourite thing was herding us around when we played outside.  Last September when I did the Red Leaf workshop on a tour of the Saltspring Cheese Company. There were three dogs that were just loving moving these chickens back and forth.  We were there to take photos of cheese but a few of us spent most of the time tracking the dogs. The morning sun and the look of sheer pleasure on this dog and the attempting-to-be-stealthy chickens just make me love it.

Shelter from the Storm: A Westcoast Wedding in November

This is the week of Ted and Crystal!!  Their engagement session was held only a few days before their wedding so we have back to back posts on this fantastic couple.  Crystal was told by Ted that the weather is much nicer on the west coast in the late fall than in Ontario.  So they headed out here for their intimate wedding at The Westin at Bear Mountain to one of the most rainy and windy Novembers in years!!  I have to admit I was really nervous about the weather for this shoot as sometimes we like shooting in the rain but sub-zero temps, heavy downpour and wind warnings are just not fun for anyone.  Indoors is always an option but nothing can replace outdoor settings.  Thankfully we were blessed with a brief reprieve just long enough to complete the ceremony and do an outdoor shoot – and then the rain came back!  We were also super lucky to have a local historical site nearby that was an amazing shelter form the storm (yes that is my plug to Bob Dylan for the day) with underground bunkers, old stone and brick work, beautiful forest, and the odd heated indoor heritage building!  Not only that but we were the only ones there which was a huge plus for Crystal!  Aaron was really excited to shoot here as he has many memories of running around there as a kid so it was a new place for a shoot but a familiar one too.  This couple was so great as the cold and wind didn’t seem to bother them a bit they were just so happy to be married and spending the day with all their closest people.  The more we do small intimate weddings the more I love the closeness that is present – you can feel it.  Ted and Crystal had told us that they like moody images with shadows and contrasting light.  I looked to reflections to find some of that for them.  After doing the Red Leaf Workshop in September I have been looking for reflections everywhere and have come to love the old glass in windows. We had a great time with thee two and loved all their original touches – first bride I have seen in red knee high Doc Martin’s and striped tights! So here is a peak at a few of our shots of their Big Day!!  Congrats Ted and Crystal!

Cold Hands Warm Hearts: Ted & Crystal

Ted and Crystal came all the way out west to have a November wedding with warmer-than-Ontario- weather only to find a chilly west coast November filled with wind and rain.  Wow did we have some stormy weather! Because they had to travel from so far away  we did their engagement session only a few days before their wedding.  It was so great to get to know these two just before the big day. Ted and Crystal had told us that they like moody lighting so we were pretty excited to bust out the pocket wizards and have some fun in those brief moments between dusk and darkness.  Crystal has a sweet shyness about her but she braved the exposed breakwater and we managed to get some shots between the strollers, joggers, and lookyloos.  It was really fun to show Ted and Crystal some of our favourite spots in the city.  It was cold and there was a drizzle but these two seemed pretty happy keeping each other warm.  Their wedding was a couple of days latter with even more wind and rain and we can’t wait to share their pics very very soon!
