Yes we love shooting weddings and cute little toddlers… but sometimes it is fun to throw on the rain gear and get really dirty photographing an amazing adventure race called Power To Play for our favourite charity Power To Be Adventure Therapy Society.  Last sunday we did just that: 28 teams, a huge outdoor race course, two massive mud pits, and some memories that these racers will not soon forget.  This whole day resulted in raising $110K for this amazing non-profit.  Aaron tore around the course on a gator catching the action while I shot people getting dirty in mud-pitt number one.  The final challenge for all racers was the huge Landeca mud pit (and bless them for it as not only did they build the pits but hey sent 8 of their own to race through it!) where Aaron and I shot together catching racers with their eyes, ears, noses, and oh yes mouths full of mud.  It poured on us all day so we were really grateful for the rain protection we just purchased for our cameras.  This is like our pre-wedding season bootcamp – non-stop super fast action and you never know what will happen in front of you.  Here are some of our favourite moments from the day and good job to all of the racers especially PTB’s own Wilderness School team! This organization is really close to our hearts.  Emmy spends every tuesday with a group of amazing kids with Autism and we shoot different events year round.  All of these funds raised got towards making the outdoors not only accessible but also a challenge that will build life skills and confidence for the future.  Visit the link above to show your support and donate.  And if this kind of race isn’t your thing register for the yearly golf tournament and auction this september.

Yesterday, after one long year, the last of the leeks were pulled from the garden to make room for some newcomers.  Many a good meal came from them and for that I am grateful. Fairwell tasty Leeks! I look forward to eating your siblings in the not so distant future once again. Aaron.

Hornby Island Part 1

Oh such a sad little blog – I should put a bird on it :) No really I have been neglecting it – we will have a new one soon so my attentions have been elsewhere.  Recently my friend Jennifer Armstrong opened up her Island and home for a group of 9 women who all share photography as a life passion to gather together and just be. It was really a very wonderful weekend.  The sun shone and we were all inspired by what was around us and who we were with.  I find even when in beautiful surroundings I am always attracted to the beauty of the people who are present.  In the first of many posts on this weekend I am focusing on Jen’s sweet little darlin’ Tess and my new good friend Jesse who just seemes to be kindred spirits from their first meet.  So here is a little of Jess and Tess.

Valentines Bliss!

Happy Valentines Day to all of you!!  This morning I (emmy) was at my wonderful monday morning yoga class with my beautiful photographer friends and our amazing teacher Maria asked us at the end of the session to bring to mind those people and places who bring us our bliss.  I love the word bliss, just the sound of it. My bliss comes from my incredible husband, who not only shares our greatest passion in making photographs but who is also my best friend in every way, my morning walks with our pup Honey and how we always stop at the end of the route to watch the ducks together, those are just a couple that I thought of today.  Another is the bliss I get from making things with my hands and gifting them to others.  I love making things, even though I am often messy and I always take longer than I think I will.  It means so much more to me to have made it… just for you.  Soon I am heading out to deliver some little Valentines treats to our lovely wedding clients. I thought today on Valentines I would share some of the bliss I have found creating this for them. The paper hearts and cookies were made by me and those delicious litle chocolates are from our neighbourhood pub and sweet shop at Spinnakers xxoo have a love-filled day!

Baby Ben is 1!

Just before Christmas we had the treat of spending a chilly Sunday morning with adorable Ben and his mum and dad at the beach.  Ben has a very sweet Auntie Lindsay who aside from planning weddings likes to surprise family members with portrait sessions as Christmas presents!  Well, this also seemed like a gift for us as Ben pretty much had us in love with him in the first five minutes! I mean really – those cheeks are too much!  Not only is he a cutie but he’s a little Canadian toughie because it was not a warm day – in fact it was cold – but being from a certain notoriously cold prairie city this climate didn’t bother him a bit.  Ben’s first birthday was just two days after we did this shoot so to warm up we went for cupcakes to celebrate.  For fun I made him a little hat, because you only ever get one first birthday.  Thanks so much for such a fun day with your lovely little family!

BIG Lights Farrrrrrrr Away

Once in a while something comes into my photographic life that makes me realize how little I actually know about a specific topic.  This time it happened to be lighting.  Emmy was kind to me over Christmas and bought me a workshop in Vancouver taught by a photographer named Martin Prihoda.  As the name of the workshop suggests, it was focused on using big lights.  We are talking 2400 watt seconds of light being pushed out of a $8000 power pack.  If you look at most of our work, its easy to tell we love shallow depth of field.  One thing you learn very quickly while using big lights is that you have to shoot at F11 or above 95% of the time.  The weekend was great overall but frustrating at times as I was sharing the models and lights with 7 other people and would have loved to have gotten more time with both.  I would definitely recommend the workshop to anyone wanting to learn some good basic lighting principals.  Many thanks again Emmy!

Help Support Baby Molly and Her Family!

Recently our friend and client Tressa of Dress Me Up sent me an email asking for help and support for a family in our community.  Baby Molly Campbell is just one month old and has been diagnosed with leukemia. She has four siblings and a mom and dad who need her to survive this tough fight.  Since treatment is in Vancouver that need all the help we can give so they can spend time with Molly as she undergoes treatment. We have donated a portrait session and print and we encourage you all to come out and bid on an auction item at Koffi or visit Molly’s site and check out the other fundraising events or donate funds directly. If you have something you would like to donate please use your blogs, etsy sites, whatever resource you have.  A little goes a long way when it comes from an entire community.

Oh my things have been busy around here!  We had quite a few sessions late in December and then Christmas orders hit and now it is 2011 and I have negelcted this little blog just a wee bit! So we have lots to share and thought we would start with this sweet little session with Ella and her mum and dad.  It was a pretty chilly day that brought out the rosy cheeks but Ella is such a fast mover that the chill didn’t seem to bother her at all.  We played in the garden, had a little tea party, read a story, and changed into a pretty Christmas dress for some holiday shots.  This little family was so fantastic in the cold weather and we just let Ella run and play as we tried to keep up.  If anyone needs a post Christmas bootcamp just try photographing an active toddler!  We really loved our time with this family and wish them all the best in the New Year!

Joyce and Antonio’s Sweet September Wedding

We loved Joyce and Antonio’s wedding – loved it. It was the perfect wedding to end the summer season.  Joyce and Antonio weren’t quite sure of all that entailed a wedding in Canada as most of their wedding experience was learned in the two wedding parties thrown for them in their homes in Taiwan and Macau. Yes you read that correctly – two! We loved our one wedding but having a total of three parties would have been fantastic!  By the time we arrived at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery no one would ever have known this was their first Canadian wedding experience – everything was perfect.  We arrived to find by fortunate coincidence that our sweet friend Lucy was their mc for the day and she did an amazing job.  The ceremony was in the gallery’s terraced garden surrounded by bonsai, bamboo, and oaks. Joyce looked so beautiful and her friend Megumi, from the Ginger Group did an amazing job on her hair – we loved her long romantic curls. We wanted to combine some of the city in Joyce and Antonio’s images so I had spotted a quiet downtown building and knew for months that it was theirs.  The bus was a quick splurge – like it was waiting there empty just for us. We had such a lovely afternoon out with them, traipsing through the tall blanched september grasses. We were happy to capture some of their silly side when Aaron caught their little inside jokes against the art installation by Miss Conception.  The evening ended with quite possibly the most fun we witnessed this summer when their friend and DJ Roman Yue played “A Little Bit of Monica” while Antonio’s sister led everyone in a group line dance – so priceless! Thanks so much to Joyce and Antonio for bringing us along on your day – it was sweet and lovely – just like the both of you.
