Rajan and Pia’s Wedding Ceremonies {Sikh and Hindu Wedding, Victoria BC}

This is our second instalment from our amazing time spent with Raj and Pia.  The day started really early, earlier than imaginable for these two and a wee bit earlier than normal for us.  With our tea and coffee in tow we headed out the parents homes for the bride and groom preparations.  Getting ready for this wedding is no small task.  At one point I looked at Pia and she was doing the triathlon of wedding prep – Sharon Rai, her makeup and wardrobe assistant, was sorting out her many layers, her sister Nidhi was adding some bling to her Mehndi, and her Auntie was feeding her cereal – all at the same time!!  Aaron was impressed with the skill of Raj’s cousin as he wrapped his turban and excited by the horse, which until this season we have not seen in a wedding.  As Rajan is Sikh and Pia is Hindu they decided to have both ceremonies which made for a very full day with lots of activities and much fun for us! The Sikh ceremony was held first at the Sikh Temple, Gurdwara in Victoria and the Hindu ceremony was held outside at the Bear Mountain Westin Resort just outside of town. For the Hindu ceremony Pia included her school friends and cousin as Bridesmaids and Rajan’s brother and cousins stood as his groomsmen. It was a gorgeous, colourful, love filled day and we were so amazed at everything we were able to be a part of and witness. After the ceremony we hopped on a bus sized van and headed out to the 18th hole.  There is a great view there but of course in typical Emmy and Aaron style the following happened on the drive: Emmy from the back of the bus: Hey Aaron see that on the right? Aaron from front of bus: Yup let’s do it!  - Stop the bus! There it was – a beautiful shaded rock wall.  We have been eyeing up quarries for a while and this was exactly what we were wanting.  We had a few minutes so we hopped out and grabbed a few shots before having to head back.  So we leave this post with a few images from that wall.  It was very hard to pick images for this post as there are so many that we love but here are a few to give you a peak into Raj and Pia’s incredible two ceremony day.  The more we work on their images the more we are missing all of the great people that we met and became friends with, we hope we get to see many of them again soon.  If you can believe it there are more images to come as the “just us and them” shoot and the reception was held the following day!  Bye for now – E&A

I am not sure of where to begin with this post.  To say that we were excited for Raj and Pia’s wedding is an understatement – I think the feeling was more like ecstatic and giddy!!  Aaron went to highschool with Rajan and before he and Pia ever contacted us about shooting their wedding his name would come up Aaron and anyone else who knew him would always say what an incredibly nice person he is – they are so right!!  And lucky for him he has married a beautiful person inside and out in Pia.  You might remember these two from the engagement session we did with them back in March. We had a great time with them on their engagement shoot but we could not have anticipated the amazing experience of spending three days with them and their families. We are still savouring every memory as it was an event that we will forever cherish and remember.  We really can’t thank the Nagpal and Dhariwal families and Raj and Pia’s friends enough for welcoming us so warmly, feeding us at every turn, and for leaving us blessed with lasting memories and friendships.  Rajan is Sikh and Pia is Hindu so their wedding combined traditions from both by having two ceremonies on one day and their reception the following day.  Before the wedding ceremonies, family and friends gathered at each of the parents homes to celebrate the ladies Sanjeet and the Maiyaan. I also went earlier in the day to cover Pia having her Mendhi {henna} applied to her hands and feet. Pia’s sister Nidhi, her mom, aunties and cousins came in and out watching, chatting as she sat patiently still while the intricate work was completed.  Behind her on the mantle I noticed a beautiful old photo of past generations of her family, watching over the room and all the preparations. In the evening I returned to the Nagpal home and Aaron went to the Dhariwal home to cover the Sanjeet and Maiyaan.  At both Raj and Pia were greeted by friends and family who rubbed their skin with spice paste and Pia was given her wedding bangles by her Uncle and Aunt.  The evening at both homes ended in food and dancing which for us was only a glimpse of what was to come in the following days. We were both struck by how close all of the extended family members are and how so many friends and family came to this evening to celebrate Raj and Pia. Because there was so much more going on in this wedding than in others we have covered, and because we took more photos than we ever thought possible for one couple! – we are splitting our usual blog post into three separate posts to show the three main days that we spent with Raj and Pia.  This post focuses on the Sangeet and Maiyaan for both Raj and Pia. We will have a post on the Hindu and Sikh ceremonies soon with more stories of our adventures with Raj and Pia so check back soon as there are more amazing images to come!!

Brenna & Matt’s Happy Tuesday

One week a go a handful of people got together in a beautiful back yard on the Gorge waterway for Brenna and Matt’s wedding.  With just their closest family and friends around them these two said their “I Do’s” under a grey sky with a little bit of rain and a lot of love.  After the ceremony we headed right across the water for a little session among the wild roses, historic buildings, and a field of buttercups at Craigflower Manor.  Once they were Mr and Mrs the rain didn’t seem to matter anymore. In our experience rainy wedding days are good luck so they are off to a good start!

Jennifer + Aiden – All They Need Is Love!

Jennifer and Aiden were born on The Rock of the east coast, met on a sunny vacation, and got married on The Rock of the west coast last Saturday!   We have been looking forward to this Metchosin wedding ever since we spent a fun afternoon with Jennifer and Aiden last fall on their engagement shoot.  The ceremony and reception were held at The Lodge at Weir’s Beach and ended with a surprise for Aiden from Jennifer when a jazz band appeared playing The Beatles’ All You Need is Love. They had their first dance on the lawn overlooking the water to my new favourite song “Nothing Like You and I” by The Perishers.  There were a few tears on many faces, even Jennifers’ Dad which was very sweet. The chilly weather was a good intro to the west coast for all of the out of town guests but no one seemed to mind.  We had such a great time getting to know their families from Newfoundland and hanging out with Jennifer and Aiden as they laughed and cried their way through the day.  Thanks to Jennifer and Aiden for including us in your day!!

So for the past couple of weeks we knew a secret, a big secret, and we are so excited to now be able to share it!!  Sarah + Travis made a run for the border, well flew actually as they came by float plane, from Seattle to Victoria to elope!! They met at a wedding and both knew instantly that it was something special and years later here they are.  This is our first elopement so we were so very excited for it and then when we arrived at Abigail’s Hotel and met Sarah and Travis – who were so excited and beaming and teary and cute – we were a little beside ourselves with happiness for them.  It felt very special to be some of only a few people to be with them on this day.  It was a little rainy and pretty chilly but nothing was taking the megawatt grins off of these two!  Days and couples like this are the reason that we photograph weddings.  You could just feel the love between them and they were so happy to be promising forever.  Their little ceremony was held at the hotel in a little nook of the garden and was complete with a chocolate cake and bottle of champagne.  The bubbly made the trip with us for the perfect toast in a field of lupins and poppies.  We are amazed that in the middle of the city there is a hill exploding like fireworks in purple, orange, pink and red – all the colours that fit this occasion perfectly.  Whenever we walk by that hill I know that we will remember the little champagne picnic and Sarah and Travis so in love.  We had such a wonderful time trekking through the field and over the tracks talking about old movies, how they met and how we met, and what they love in life.  To our new friends Sarah + Travis thank you so much for spending your special secret day with us and we know that you have many years of love ahead.              xo emmy + aaron

Nic and Erin are Mr. and Mrs.!!! {Wedding Photography Victoria BC}

Erin and Nic got married!!! And we got to be there for the whole day! When we woke up on Sunday morning we were a little worried about the big dark clouds looming in the distance and by early afternoon Nic and Lindsay (Annabelle Lee Events and bridesmaid) were busy checking the weather reports and fretting about the rain drops that were starting to fall. But by go time Sophie was in her wagon and the grey skies that started the ceremony opened up to end the ceremony with full sun.  This little family is so sweet and when Sophie was pulled down the aisle in her little rose covered wagon everyone (including me!) got a little teary.  Nic and Erin had their first dance on the patio at the Inn at Laurel Point at sunset and it was one of the most beautiful first dances ever! You could definitely feel the love in the room for these three! We had a lot of fun with the whole party shooting at different locations, busting out the long boards, and sharing Sophie’s first Harbour Ferry and limo rides. It was also great to meet some other wedding industry folks as Melanie Baird did the makeup for Erin and some of the other ladies and the reception guests got a lot of giggles out of the photobooth from Island Photobooth Happy married life to our new friends Nic and Erin!! Here is a preview of some images from their big day!!

Nic and Erin are getting married this May and we recently went out to shoot their engagement session with them and their daughter Sophie.  We met Nic and Erin through Lindsay of Annabelle Lee Events. We spent a beautiful late afternoon with these three in the park and at the beach, along with their super nice friends who came to entertain Sophie while we worked with Nic and Erin.  Sophie is a lively, sweet, funny little peanut who I am sure will be a show stealer at their wedding!  Nic and Erin were tons of fun – Nic had some pretty funny stuff to say to make Erin and Sophie laugh.  They are such a sweet little family and we are so excited for their wedding that is coming so soon.  Here are some images from our session with them.  We can’t wait to be a part of their big day!!

Love, a boat, and the beautiful beach

Wedding season is almost here!!!!  We get cabin fever in the winter, not because we live in a cabin or because we live in the snow – more like rain and wind, but because winter means not as many people feel like braving the winter storms for weddings and engagement shoots.  Spring means flowers, warm sun, fragrant breezes and engagement sessions!!!  We really love e-sessions because we get to know the couple before the big day and it makes us that much more excited for their wedding. We arrive on the most important day of their lives as friends.  This last weekend, we had the pleasure of shooting two e-sessions and here are some pics from our afternoon with Pia and Rajan.  Aaron and Rajan grew up in the same schools together – who knew that one day we would be their photographers! The morning was rainy but afternoon brought us beautiful cloud filtered sun and dramatic skies at one of our favourite locations.  One great things about e-sessions is you don’t have to worry about the big beautiful white dress. Don’t get me wrong I love the dress – it just limits what you can do sometimes as it isn’t that easy to climb around stuff in.  I had spotted this boat quite a while ago when using this location for a wedding but the climb required to board this beauty was not quite big-white-dress appropriate :)  I think this boat was waiting for Pia and Rajan. Here are some images of our session with them. We had such a great time it was hard to choose which ones to post!
