Shelter from the Storm: A Westcoast Wedding in November

This is the week of Ted and Crystal!!  Their engagement session was held only a few days before their wedding so we have back to back posts on this fantastic couple.  Crystal was told by Ted that the weather is much nicer on the west coast in the late fall than in Ontario.  So they headed out here for their intimate wedding at The Westin at Bear Mountain to one of the most rainy and windy Novembers in years!!  I have to admit I was really nervous about the weather for this shoot as sometimes we like shooting in the rain but sub-zero temps, heavy downpour and wind warnings are just not fun for anyone.  Indoors is always an option but nothing can replace outdoor settings.  Thankfully we were blessed with a brief reprieve just long enough to complete the ceremony and do an outdoor shoot – and then the rain came back!  We were also super lucky to have a local historical site nearby that was an amazing shelter form the storm (yes that is my plug to Bob Dylan for the day) with underground bunkers, old stone and brick work, beautiful forest, and the odd heated indoor heritage building!  Not only that but we were the only ones there which was a huge plus for Crystal!  Aaron was really excited to shoot here as he has many memories of running around there as a kid so it was a new place for a shoot but a familiar one too.  This couple was so great as the cold and wind didn’t seem to bother them a bit they were just so happy to be married and spending the day with all their closest people.  The more we do small intimate weddings the more I love the closeness that is present – you can feel it.  Ted and Crystal had told us that they like moody images with shadows and contrasting light.  I looked to reflections to find some of that for them.  After doing the Red Leaf Workshop in September I have been looking for reflections everywhere and have come to love the old glass in windows. We had a great time with thee two and loved all their original touches – first bride I have seen in red knee high Doc Martin’s and striped tights! So here is a peak at a few of our shots of their Big Day!!  Congrats Ted and Crystal!
