You may remember that we recently participated in the silent auction for Baby Molly (who is doing great!). Jessy and Lucky came out for the good cause and they were the winning bidders of our photo session! So last week, before the city was covered in snow, we met up with them in a gorgeous Garry Oak grove to record some memories of Jessy’s beautiful baby belly before their wee one joins us. I recognized Lucky right away but couldn’t place where I knew him until we got talking and realized we were at UVic together as history undergrads, oh so long ago. I spent many a school night at Steamers Pub listening to his band Lift. That feels like forever ago – when we were all so young, Lucky had long hair, and Steamers was still here. How life changes for us all – now it is a home based business with book publications, radio shows on CBC, dogs, houses, and the soon to arrive baby. We could just see how excited these two are about this next change in their life. They are calm, happy, and ready to be three. Thanks so much to Jessy and Lucky for spending such a great winter morning with us as we preserved the memory of this time. We are excited to meet your little one… whenever they decide to arrive.

I love flowers, love them. All summer I tried my hand at various arrangements from my garden. I became very very good at the bed-head equivalent of floral design. “Oh I like it looking a bit messy” I would tell myself. Not quite true, I just didn’t know what I was doing. One recent friday afternoon I had the great delight of stepping behind the scenes at Victoria’s newest and I have to say cutest floral design boutique Rook & Rose. The shop is owned and directed by the lovely Erica, who studied floral design in Australia, and she has a team helpers like Cara and Nora to assist. I was so excited for this shoot because I always see the finished product but have no idea how it all comes together. The day of my visit was quite busy with buckets of ranunculus, tulips, anemones, and peonies all being turned into beautiful little teacup centre pieces and bouquets for a wedding. Erica’s inspiration comes from a lot of different sources – little inspiration boards in antique frames highlight vintage, retro, high fashion – all with her own twist. Erica puts so much heart into her work. Like us, she has an old Smith Corona handed down to her and aptly named Daphne – she hand types the little price tags and notes for around the shop and for clients. I loved looking at all her little fabric swatches and style articles pinned up on cork boards – if I had a flower shop I would imagine it just like this and with these exact people. I had such a fantastic afternoon watching them create, listening to The Shins, and laughing. I am so happy to be sharing these images of this little shop – and for all you brides out there – if you like what you see you better call her quick because word has gotten out about the unique style of The Rook & Rose and wedding bookings fill up fast! Many thanks to my new friends Erica, Cara, and Nora for letting me share the afternoon with you!!

I am not sure of where to begin with this post. To say that we were excited for Raj and Pia’s wedding is an understatement – I think the feeling was more like ecstatic and giddy!! Aaron went to highschool with Rajan and before he and Pia ever contacted us about shooting their wedding his name would come up Aaron and anyone else who knew him would always say what an incredibly nice person he is – they are so right!! And lucky for him he has married a beautiful person inside and out in Pia. You might remember these two from the engagement session we did with them back in March. We had a great time with them on their engagement shoot but we could not have anticipated the amazing experience of spending three days with them and their families. We are still savouring every memory as it was an event that we will forever cherish and remember. We really can’t thank the Nagpal and Dhariwal families and Raj and Pia’s friends enough for welcoming us so warmly, feeding us at every turn, and for leaving us blessed with lasting memories and friendships. Rajan is Sikh and Pia is Hindu so their wedding combined traditions from both by having two ceremonies on one day and their reception the following day. Before the wedding ceremonies, family and friends gathered at each of the parents homes to celebrate the ladies Sanjeet and the Maiyaan. I also went earlier in the day to cover Pia having her Mendhi {henna} applied to her hands and feet. Pia’s sister Nidhi, her mom, aunties and cousins came in and out watching, chatting as she sat patiently still while the intricate work was completed. Behind her on the mantle I noticed a beautiful old photo of past generations of her family, watching over the room and all the preparations. In the evening I returned to the Nagpal home and Aaron went to the Dhariwal home to cover the Sanjeet and Maiyaan. At both Raj and Pia were greeted by friends and family who rubbed their skin with spice paste and Pia was given her wedding bangles by her Uncle and Aunt. The evening at both homes ended in food and dancing which for us was only a glimpse of what was to come in the following days. We were both struck by how close all of the extended family members are and how so many friends and family came to this evening to celebrate Raj and Pia. Because there was so much more going on in this wedding than in others we have covered, and because we took more photos than we ever thought possible for one couple! – we are splitting our usual blog post into three separate posts to show the three main days that we spent with Raj and Pia. This post focuses on the Sangeet and Maiyaan for both Raj and Pia. We will have a post on the Hindu and Sikh ceremonies soon with more stories of our adventures with Raj and Pia so check back soon as there are more amazing images to come!!

Erin and Nic got married!!! And we got to be there for the whole day! When we woke up on Sunday morning we were a little worried about the big dark clouds looming in the distance and by early afternoon Nic and Lindsay (Annabelle Lee Events and bridesmaid) were busy checking the weather reports and fretting about the rain drops that were starting to fall. But by go time Sophie was in her wagon and the grey skies that started the ceremony opened up to end the ceremony with full sun. This little family is so sweet and when Sophie was pulled down the aisle in her little rose covered wagon everyone (including me!) got a little teary. Nic and Erin had their first dance on the patio at the Inn at Laurel Point at sunset and it was one of the most beautiful first dances ever! You could definitely feel the love in the room for these three! We had a lot of fun with the whole party shooting at different locations, busting out the long boards, and sharing Sophie’s first Harbour Ferry and limo rides. It was also great to meet some other wedding industry folks as Melanie Baird did the makeup for Erin and some of the other ladies and the reception guests got a lot of giggles out of the photobooth from Island Photobooth Happy married life to our new friends Nic and Erin!! Here is a preview of some images from their big day!!

With the arrival of spring (sort of, it snowed last Sunday) and a new macro lens from Richard and Amy of Red Leaf, it was time to start in on what I look forward to every year, taking photos of backlit leaves. I would have to say my favorite is the Indian-Plum or Oemleria cerasiformis. Below this is the one with the small oval leaves growing upright off a branch. Emmy often questions if we need so many photos of leaves, perhaps because they fill a large portion of our hard drive. To this I say you can never have too many photos of Oemleria cerasiformis. The photos below have been shot over the last month both in our yard and around Victoria. Enjoy!

We love that living here on the West Coast means that there are some people who have the courage to plan outdoor weddings year round! For those locals reading this you know that this November has been windy, wet, and cold!! Admittedly we were feeling a bit nervous about the weather for Tamara and Adrian’s outdoor ceremony at the beautiful Sooke Harbour House. The morning of the shoot we were checking out our planned locations and the wind nearly blew Emmy over! There were dramatic clouds, swirling winds, and white caps on the water – all the makings for some beautiful images. Luckily Sooke Harbour house is tucked in a little wind free nook and seeking shelter from the wind led us to explore the less travelled areas of the property – like the wood pile! Tamara and Adrian are both very sweet and warm people and that warmth really comes through in the images. The day was filled with so much love. Their intimate wedding with just a few family and friends had such a close and connected feeling about it. There were two young show stealers running about creating sweet scrabble messages and pretending to be the bride’s bodyguards! The evening ended with a very moving piano performance by one of the youngest guests, the family all gathered together around one table with the fire warming the room, and Tamara and Adrian were married! There were many special moments that we were so honoured to witness and here are a few we wanted to share. Congratulations to a very lovely couple!

Kas and Jen are from Toronto Ontario but came out to our beautiful home town of Victoria British Columbia for their wedding. When we met them for coffee the day before the big day to go over the shoot we had so much fun chatting we felt like we were hanging out with good friends. These two are definitely a Rock ‘n Roll couple. Kas if half of the electronic music duo Tetris Hold’em. He uses software to play music on gameboys – how cool is that! Jen designs handbags inspired by retro images, photo belt buckle, chic aprons, and much more under the name Bennie and Olive. She named her business after her Grandparents as they were the ones who taught her the skills she now uses as a designer. Jen’s gorgeous dress and coat were made by her friends and fellow Toronto designers Comrags. Her shoes are Ceylon by John Fluvog and were named after tea because the heels look like teapot spouts. Jen crocheted the guys’ bow ties which I have to say are the best bowties I have ever seen and it was so cute because Kas was so proud to be wearing it. The shot of her brother was nabbed as we left the shoot – her dad was unable to make it to the wedding but he sent his cowboy boots and hat for her brother to wear in his absence.
The garden photos and ceremony was held at Abkhazi Gardens which is now a protected property as it was originally the home and gardens of Prince and Princess Abkhazi descendants of Russian Royalty and is now a protected property managed by The Land Conservancy
These two have the best story as they both grew up on the prairies and later found themselves living in Toronto. They were flying home and Kas spotted Jen in the airport while waiting for his flight and was more than happy to find that not only was Jen on the same flight but that his seat was next to her when they boarded the plane. By the end of the flight Jen said she arrived home beaming and quite smitten. Jen told us she had never thought she would be the marrying kind until she met Kas. They are such genuine, sweet, and creative people and we are looking forward to hanging out with them when we head to Toronto this week. These two have so much love and they really brought it to the shoot which made our job so easy!! Congrats to Kas and Jen!!
Also this shoot has been featured on Rock ‘n Roll Bride!!! For more images you can visit at http://www.rocknrollbride.com/2009/10/escape/

My brother Fraser phoned me last saturday and asked if I would like to come out and shoot some photos of him and his crew, Erik van der Pol. This involved me driving around for the afternoon in a 15 foot inflatable with a 75 hp engine on the back. Fun Times! The photos were for a media package and their website. They are campaigning for the 2012 Olympics in London for the 470 Class of sailboats and well on there way with a 1′st at the Nationals last year.
